The General Department of Punitive and Correctional Institutions at Dubai Police, in cooperation with benefactors, managed to pay off debts of 21 prisoners jailed in trade cases, disputes, bank loan cases, among others.

Brigadier Ali Muhammad Al Shamali, the Director of the General Department of Punitive and Correctional Institutions, said that the administration received from a benefactor Dh1.08 million, which helped release four inmates, and the institution received from a second benefactor Dh916,613, which helped release 17 prisoners.

Al Shamali said that Dubai Police is keen to cooperate with charity organizations and to expand its humanitarian work, especially as UAE is currently celebrating the Year of Tolerance launched by The President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in his capacity as the Ruler of Abu Dhabi.

He praised the people's humanitarian gesture that helped 21 inmates return to their families, stressing that these humanitarian initiatives are a great example of the solidarity of UAE community members and a tribute to the efforts of the government and private institutions to build the nation.

Humanitarian Care Department head Lt. Habib Husain Al Zarouni said that the donations exceeded Dh2 million. Adding that one of the released inmates, Asian expat, was arrested during his transit stay in Dubai International Airport due to accumulated credit card bills he failed to pay since 1998. His debt of over Dh50,000 was paid and now he's going back home with his family.
