Kuwait refuses to renew residence of 200 Egyptian nationals stranded outside

KUWAIT CITY: The Ministry of Education has refused to renew the residency of about 200 Egyptian teachers and administrators whose residency permits expired while they are outside the country, reports Al-Anba daily quoting informed sources from the educational sector.

Sources told the daily that the ministry received around 200 letters from the Kuwaiti Embassy in Cairo regarding teachers whose residency has expired and are requesting for renewal.

Sources said the teachers sent letters to the Kuwaiti Embassy which, in turn, forwarded the letters to the ministry for action.

Sources clarified that as per the prevailing procedures, the ministry does not take decision on the renewal of residency of expatriate staff whose residency while they are outside the country; stressing the matter is in the hands of the Interior Ministry.

On the other hand, work of the joint committee between Kuwait Teachers Society (KTS) and the Ministry of Education has stopped and it has not held any meeting for several months. This came after they reached a dead end on a number of pending issues in the educational sector.

In this context, sources revealed the committee’s functions include researching and discussing many matters related to the educational process and the educational system in general. Sources said KTS submitted a set of proposals through the joint committee, but these proposals were kept aside.

Sources added KTS decided to suspend the work of this committee until further notice; affirming that the society is working hard to address the issues concerning teachers and the educational sector in general, and then it will move to the pending issues through communication with officials in the ministry and educational districts.
