MANAMA: His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa inaugurated a new commercial and shopping complex in Muharraq yesterday.

Muharraq citizens deserve mega development projects that are part of the government’s development and urbanisation strategy, the Prime Minister said after opening Muharraq Central, which is the redeveloped old central market.

The three-storey market, which is spread over 28,000sqm area, or four times the size of the old market, features a 180-car underground parking lot, 61 multi-purpose commercial outlets, in addition to sections for vegetables, meat and fish.

A new LuLu Hypermarket, also opened later yesterday by Deputy Premier Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, covers the entire first floor of the new complex.

The Premier said that the central market’s temporary building would be kept and at the same rent for vendors who want to stay there.

He directed officials to reorganise the area to provide more parking spaces to serve its commercial, service and educational facilities, and facilitate traffic to and from the central market.

The government’s strategy to enhance development across towns and villages in Bahrain and provide all services to citizens is in line with the directives of His Majesty King Hamad, the Premier said.

He also gave instructions to build more projects to serve Muharraq and its people, contribute to better and more services there, and provide recreational facilities for local citizens.

The Prime Minister highlighted the government’s keenness to develop central markets in a way that copes with rapid urbanisation and meets the aspirations of citizens and residents.

Central markets should also support small traders and their livelihoods, as well as open up new horizons for encouraging investments in them to stimulate the business movement in the kingdom, the Premier said.

He toured the complex and was briefed on its facilities by Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf. Present were ministers and senior officials.

The Prime Minister spoke to a number of the market’s traders about commercial activities and the facilities provided by the government for the private sector.

He also expressed his admiration for the new market’s design and architectural style that combine modernity and Muharraq’s tradition.

He hailed its new facilities, organisation and services, which are in line with modern requirements and cater to the needs of visitors and shoppers.
