Public medical facilities in the capital could be set to undergo a “green facelift”, as municipal authorities approved a new initiative.

The Capital Trustees Board yesterday approved a proposal to plant trees and flowers at nine health centres across the Capital Governorate, in addition to having murals painted on the walls.

The initiative, which will be reviewed by Health Minister Faeqa Al Saleh, will be carried out in partnership with the private sector.

Bahrain’s largest public hospital, Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC), has been excluded from the project due to development and expansion work being carried out there.

However, Dr Maha Al Shehab, a member of the Capital Trustees Board, said the hospital would be included in the scheme at a later stage.

“Introducing more greenery is an expansion to the country’s green spaces and will have a positive effect on visitors at health centres,” she said.

“It would also give more emphasis to protecting the environment from destruction.

“We have selected neem and moringa trees, along with flowers and roses, which we believe would be a healthy and beautiful addition to health centres – these could be expanded on in future.

“When the Health Ministry approves the initiative, we will form joint teams to assess health centres and determine the most suitable approach for each, besides having graffiti with health tips and messages on walls and inside facilities – all through partnership with the private sector.”

During the board’s weekly meeting yesterday, chairman Saleh Tarradah said the initiative had the potential to be expanded to include introducing green structures at medical facilities.

“Health centres or any medical establishment in the country should be environmentally-friendly by using energy saving facilities, insulators and other engineering approaches,” he said.

“As we progress this initiative from the plantation aspect, my idea could be a vision for the future.

“The private medical sector in the Capital Governorate, already proactive, could also voluntarily join the initiative as we expand the scope of this green drive.”
