NEW DELHI, Oct 13 (KUNA) -- China and Nepal ON Sunday signed 20 agreements to deepen bilateral relations, on the sidelines of the talks held between visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Nepalese leadership.

In a joint statement issued after the talks between the Chinese President who arrived Saturday in Kathmandu on a two-day visit with his Nepalese counterpart Bidya Devi Bhandariand and Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the leaders of the two countries reached broad understanding on bilateral relationship and regional and international issues of common concern.

Both the sides "expressed satisfaction over the fact that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1955, Nepal-China relationship has withstood changes of the international situation", the ministry said.

Equality, harmonious coexistence, ever-lasting friendship and comprehensive cooperation are the nature of the bilateral relationship between the two countries, it said.

Both the neighboring countries agreed to exploit the "Belt and Road Initiative as an important opportunity to deepen mutually-beneficial cooperation in all fields in a comprehensive manner".

The leadership of both the nations also pledged to "jointly pursue common prosperity and dedicate themselves to maintaining peace, stability and development in the region." China and Nepal agreed to respect independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of both the nations and renewed commitment to respect and each other's concerns and core interests.

Nepal underlined its One China Nepal policy and asserted that "Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory and Tibet affairs are China's internal affairs", while asserting that Nepal will not allow any anti-China activities on its soil.

The Chinese President pledged firm support to Nepal's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

China also affirmed its commitment and "respect to Nepal's social system and development path independently chosen in the light of Nepal's national conditions", the statement noted.

China and Nepal agreed to speed up implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative signed in 2017 to enhance connectivity, it pointed out.

The initiative covers ports, roads, railways, aviation and communications which would contribute to the Himalayan nation's development agenda especially its target to become a middle income country and realizing the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The visit of the agreement signed today aim at strengthening cooperation in various fields of "economy including trade, tourism, investment, capacity of production and improving people's livelihood", it said.

Chinese president, coming after 23 years gap, is seen as yet another step, in addition to massive Chinese financial support, to reduce Nepal's dependence on its historical close alley India.

Among the agreements are those on boundary management system, exchanges and cooperation on governance capacity building, mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, promoting key projects of investment, setting up a consulate general of Nepal in Chengdu.

MoUs on feasibility study of China-Nepal cross-border railway project, establishment of sister-city relationship, cooperation on traditional medicine, disaster risk reduction and emergency response are some other major achievements of this visit. (end) atk.hm
