MANAMA: The National Oil and Gas Authority (Noga) is studying the development of an aromatics complex in partnership with Petrochemical Industries Company of Kuwait and Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic), Oil Minister Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa has said.

The minister was speaking on the sidelines of the 11th International Conference and Exhibition on Chemistry in Industry (ChemIndix) 2019, at the Gulf Hotel yesterday.

Shaikh Mohammed said the project would cover the construction of a 1.44 million tonnes aromatics plant which will produce ethylene glycol, ethylene and more products.

The aromatics plant will be integrated with the Bapco refinery from where it will receive feed stock.

The minister inaugurated the conference and exhibition on behalf of His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, under whose patronage the three-day event is being held.

It is organised by the American Chemical Society, represented by the Saudi Arabian International Chemical Sciences Chapter, in co-ordination with the Noga and supported by Saudi Aramco and a number of local and international companies.

Talking about the performance of Bahraini oil companies affiliated to Noga, Shaikh Mohammed said they are using the best practices and environmentally friendly technologies such as advanced trends in carbon capture and storage and enhanced oil recovery.

He said the conference would tackle five main themes: The role of innovative materials and their applications in future industries, the circular carbon economy and achieving sustainability, the role of artificial intelligence and technology in the discovery of materials, the creation of catalysts in the chemical industry and finding innovative refining solutions to address the challenges of oil exploration and extraction.

The minister was joined by a number of senior officials, as he inaugurated the accompanying exhibition, where he was briefed on the products and services that represent latest technologies in the oil, gas and petrochemicals industry.

More than 30 national and international oil and gas and refining companies are taking part in the exhibition.
