Sustainability, automation and artificial intelligence in cities of the future are some of the key topics to be discussed at the third annual Smart Cities Symposium being hosted virtually by the University of Bahrain from September 21.

The symposium, being conducted virtually in partnership with the Institution of Engineering And Technology in UK, will include presentations from decision makers and researchers from across the region who have been working to integrate analytics and alternative energy solutions into infrastructure and construction projects.

Chaired by the university’s president Dr Riyad Hamzah, keynote speakers for the three-day event will include Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the project director of the Sehati health digitisation project at the Supreme Council for Health, and Bahrain Airport Company chief executive Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah.

Dr Ebrahim Mattar, associate professor in the college of engineering at the university, and one of the organisers of the symposium said: “We will have speakers from all over the world including the Middle East, the US, the UK, India, China and Bahrain presenting virtually this year.

“Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, we have had to postpone the hackathon that is usually conducted along with the symposium. In the past, concepts from papers presented at the symposium, including energy management in large scale buildings and hotels, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications, have been implemented in ongoing projects and we look forward to the same this year.”

More than 100 technical papers including research and real-world solutions will be presented at the symposium. Topics include autonomous vehicles, cybersecurity, technology-assisted pedagogy, and automated oil refining and industrial processes.
