AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), in cooperation with the Central Traffic Department (CTD), plans to replace the 6th Circle with a traffic light intersection to allow for optimal traffic flow, especially given the high number of vehicles which pass through it.

“Roundabouts increase the chances of collisions, as passing through them requires a high level of awareness; therefore, replacing the 6th Circle will improve traffic flow, as it provides maximum control at intersections,” Mohammad Faouri, head of the Traffic Operations Department at GAM, told The Jordan Times on Monday.

“Construction work will begin on the evening of Wednesday, November 27, to assign the right-of-way for opposite lanes of traffic using traffic lights, which boost safety in the streets of Amman,” Faouri added.

Road safety devices and signs will be installed by GAM and the CTD on site, in order to avoid traffic jams building up on the streets during construction work on the circle, according to Faouri.

The main objective of the conversion is to enable the circle to handle heavy traffic, especially considering the more than 4,500 vehicles that pass through 6th Circle daily, said the GAM official.
