Work on the proposed 30-megawatt solar energy project in Saudi Arabia’s Haradh region is facing delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, the National Agricultural Development Co. (Nadec) said.

The facility, which was previously scheduled to start operating on March 31, 2021, is expected to cut Nadec’s energy consumption and carbon emissions.

In a statement to the Saudi Stock Exchange (Tadawul) on Monday, Nadec said the project is still 75 percent complete, so the commissioning and commercial operation will be delayed to July 31, 2021.

“The project is still in the construction stage… Due to the coronavirus pandemic leading to a force majeure situation which impact the global supply chains, this led to the delay of some project execution work, and has resulted in postponement of supply and implementation activities of the project,” the statement said.

In 2019, a 25-year solar power purchase agreement (PPA) was signed with French electric utility firm Engie for the establishment of the solar plant in Nadec City in Haradh.
