A total of 50,711 new vehicles were registered in 2022 – a sharp rise after a dip in the last few years due to an economic slowdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic and oil-price slump. Oman had seen 4,800 fewer vehicle registrations in 2021 compared to 2020.

The total number of vehicles in Oman, by the end of December 2022, increased 3.2 per cent to 1,603,376, according to data released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information. In 2021, the number of registered vehicles was 1,552,665.

Private vehicles accounted for 79.4 per cent or 1,273,791 of the total, while the number of commercial vehicles was 238,512, or 14.9 per cent.

The NCSI statistics showed that there were 28,633 rental vehicles (1.8 per cent of the total), 28,117 taxis (1.8 per cent), 12,167 government-registered vehicles (excluding military vehicles), 6,765 motorcycles, 5,744 driving school vehicles and 1,280 agricultural tractors.

Additionally, there were 7,528 temporary registration vehicles – numbers used for pre-registration examination purposes and export and import vehicles.
