Iraq has approved a project to construct 4,000 houses in the Northern Kirkuk governorate within plans to tackle housing problems through the Arab country, the official Alsabah newspaper said on Sunday.

The project runs parallel to other projects in Kirkuk city involving construction of new roads, expansion of central road networks and building of bridges, it said, quoting the governor's assistant Ali Al Hammadi.

"We will soon launch projects to build nearly 4,000 houses after we received cabinet approval...these units will be distributed to citizens at affordable prices," he said.

The governorate has already allocated land for the housing project, he added.
