National Industrialisation Company (Tasnee) is assessing viable options, including installing of new upgraded electrical equipment, to achieve the original design load of 45 megawatts (MW) at its ilmenite smelter project.

The first furnace is operating at 42 MW compared to the target load of 45 MW, which is 70 percent of the furnace design capacity, the company said in a statement to the Saudi stock exchange.

The target load of 45 MW is expected to be achieved in the second half of 2023.

The statement said the project consists of two furnaces, adding the first furnace produces chloride slag and pig iron.

The project owner, Advanced Metal Industries Cluster and contractor, Metso Outotec, will bear the costs of the design modifications.
