State-owned Egyptian National Railways (ENR) and Transmashholding International,  the overseas subsidiary of Russian rolling stock company Transmashholding (TMH), have signed an agreement to establish a workshop in Abu Zaabal to maintain and overhaul Russian passenger coaches being operated by ENR across the country’s railway network.

The agreement aims to establish a new workshop in cooperation with Transmash, which will prepare its designs and supply the necessary equipment for the new workshop to carry out maintenance work, Egypt Independent news portal and other media reported on last week, citing Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir.

The report said TMH International will provide technical support for 12 years and transfer expertise to Egyptian workers to enable them to carry out the required maintenance.

The pact also includes carrying out necessary maintenance for railway coaches contracted to TMH International in 2018. Al Wazir said that 725 new coaches had been supplied under the deal, including 499 third-class vehicles with dynamic ventilation and 226 third-class coaches with air conditioning.

On Sunday, Zawya Projects had reported Egypt’s SCZONE and a Hungarian rolling stock company discussed the potential for establishing service and maintenance centres for the Hungarian company in East Port Said.
