EPS48 supplies power for 48 IP devices such as IP telephones and WiFi access points

DUBAI, UAE, 2 October 2004 - Zultys Technologies today announced the release of its Ethernet Powered Switch, the EPS48, with 48 10/100 Mb/s Ethernet ports and two 1 Gb/s fibre ports. It provides Power over Ethernet (PoE) on all copper ports to power devices such as IP telephones, keyless entry systems, security cameras and WiFi access points.

The EPS48 can be connected to any -48 volt supply such as Zultys' Battery Powered Switch, the BPS12. By using the combination of an EPS48 and a BPS12, such devices will remain powered in the event of failure of the AC power. The BPS12 is a rack mounted battery system that Zultys introduced in November 2003. As with everything that Zultys manufactures, this product fully embraces open standards and therefore supports the official IEEE PoE standard, IEEE 802.3af.

"Although Zultys concentrates on IP telephony, the switching features in the EPS48 match any comparable product on the market," said Patrick Ferriter, VP of product marketing at Zultys. "The product is easy to manage and configure through a Windows based interface, so administrators can turn this up quickly, just as they do with our other family of products."

Traditional telephone systems continue to operate in the event of AC power failure. With IP phone systems, the phones are normally powered by an AC power adapter and if the AC power fails, the phone cannot function. Using the BPS12 with the EPS48, the system administrator can choose which IP phones will continue to operate, and by proper scaling, for how long. One BPS12 can provide backup time for 48 phones, such as the Zultys ZIP 4x4, for one hour. The system administrator can obtain longer backup by either deploying multiple BPS12s or by selectively disabling power on some Ethernet ports.

"It is absolutely fundamental that IP telephony infrastructures remain 'switched on' in the event of power outages," said Jess Thompson-Hughes, managing director of React Technologies, a UK reseller of Zultys solutions. "In addition, network managers need to be able to determine which IP phones and specific users remain operational, the EPS48 does this seamlessly and efficiently. If, for example, a call centre has a power failure the network manager can ensure that the centre's most experienced staff continue to be able to receive and make calls."

Pricing and Availability:

Pricing for the EPS48 is $5,200 and the BPS12 is $2,990. The EPS48 is one rack mounting unit (RU) high and the BPS12 is 3RU. Each is available through certified Zultys resellers around the world.
