Wireless Connectivity Available Anywhere, Anytime

Dubai, U.A.E. - Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV), a leading global provider of communications networks for businesses today, says it has completed phase 1 of leading educational institution UAE University’s wireless network.

The first phase of the project was implemented in four weeks and will see an initial 1000 students of UAE University’s 17,000 strong student body logging onto the new wireless network, through out its Maqam 5 hostel and various academic campuses including libraries.
"Part of our charge as educators of tomorrow’s leaders is to ensure we provide a rich, compelling and complete learning experience for our students," said Dr. Ali Rashid Alnoaimi, DVC for Academic Affairs, UAE University.

The first phase has seen the installation of 140 of Avaya’s industry leading Wireless AP-3 access points, which delivers 10,000 square metres of connectivity of and has the capacity to handle up to 30,000 users.

The new wireless solution will allow students access to e-libraries, video conferencing, on-line courses, web-based classes, course material and more from anywhere on the campus. Whether it is in a student’s accommodation, the classroom or outdoors.

“Our investment in Avaya’s leading edge technology is an example of our commitment to providing an unparalleled educational experience to our student body. Avaya’s wireless solution has enabled us to effectively turn the world into one big class room. This can only benefit our students,” said Dr. Ahmed K. Al-Mutawa, DVC for Planning, UAE University.

UAE University says it chose Avaya’s solution for its ability to meet its current requirements while still leaving enough scope for future expansion.

"Obviously the implementation of this technology indicates a major outlay of capital. Avaya’s solution allows us to protect our investment. Without any additional expenditure on infrastructure, it will enable us to upgrade to next-generation technology as and when it becomes available," said Muhammad Javeed, Director IT Center, UAE University.

The new wireless network runs 2.4 Ghz over 11Mb. However Avaya’s Wireless AP-3 access point enables users to make the seamless transition to the soon to be internationally ratified 5 Ghz network solution which runs over 54 Mb.

"Avaya’s wireless solution enables migration to next-generation networks without replacement of existing infrastructure. The only changes required are new 54 Mb cards for both the computers of network users and for the Access Point 3 themselves and a simple software upgrade," said Graham Owen, Channel Manager Gulf and the Levant, Avaya.

With two card slots available in each Access Point 3 the infrastructure can easily handle 11 Mb and 54 Mb traffic simultaneously. "This enables organizations to gradually phase out the 11 Mb cards over time," concluded Owen.

The wireless network in place also allows the University to enter a converged environment further down the track. "Our solution gives UAE University the ability to implement the operability and functionality of convergence technology, opening up the realms of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) applications and IP telephony to students and staff alike," said Owen.

"The infrastructure being used by UAE University is the same as was deployed at the FIFA World Cup this year, which delivered 99.999% secure uptime."
