3M™ Scotch Weld™ Adhesive holds the weight of a mid-range car

The 45-meter boom of a crane rose high above the ground recently - holding a mid-range sized car including a metal lifting frame. The only thing holding them in the air was two metal plates the size of a postcard, bonded together by 3M™ Scotch Weld™ Adhesive DP 490.

The unique demonstration impressively illustrates the bonding strength of 3M's epoxy-based two-part structural adhesives. 3M™ high performance adhesives such as the Scotch-Weld DP 490 used here, are being used throughout the region for many industrial applications such as automotive and aircraft construction. 3M™ adhesives, which are lighter weight and more flexible than mechanical bonding systems, achieve high structural strength at room temperature - even on low surface energy substrates like plastics. 3M adhesive specialist Marcus Sauerborn who did the calculations and adhesive bonding for the demonstration, said; "I have full confidence in the adhesive and would even sit inside the car myself and let it be lifted up!"

Adhesive technology is gaining increasing importance in modern manufacturing processes for industry and trade. 3M has developed a broad range of high performance adhesives for applications in nearly all industries, which are used to bond the most diverse materials to meet a wide variety of loading and end-use requirements.
