The Ministry of Environmental Protection (MOEP), a governmental ministry leading Israel's climate and environment action nationally and internationally, has joined forces with Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF), Israel's largest green organisation and the oldest green organisation in the world. The duo is gearing up to host the very first event at Israel’s Pavilion for EXPO, one of the most high-profile events of the decade. The event takes place during EXPO’s Climate and Biodiversity Week.

The Expo has the aim of increasing awareness about challenges faced by humanity, on a global scale. The duo will present accumulated knowledge, experience and preparedness for climate change through nature-based solutions. MOEP will additionally present the DeserTech initiative - an international innovation center promoting solutions to the challenges of climate change and sustainable life in desert regions.

KKL-JNF’s 120 year-long track record as a leading environmental and land management agency makes the organisation poised to support regional climate change efforts and the MOEP intends to contribute to the development of technologies and policy measures for coping with arid climates and limited resources, using Israel's knowledge and experience in multiple environmental arenas, with a view to working jointly with the UAE and other regional and global partners.

At today’s event, Tamar Zandberg, Minister of Environmental Protection, said: “At Expo Dubai, in addition to presenting Israel’s capabilities, we are examining opportunities for cooperation and partnerships with other countries facing similar challenges, both in our region and beyond. Today we place emphasis on nature-based solutions as part of preparedness for climate change, strengthening and preserving biodiversity and harnessing Israeli technological innovation. The desert poses many challenges to humanity and the key to dealing with them involves; technology, innovation and collaboration. The DeserTech international innovation center we presented today, will enable the harnessing of Israeli experience and innovation for the benefit of all countries in the world, in our fight against climate change and its repercussions. This conversation will constitute a meeting point for technology, research and policy. We invite entities from across the region to partner with us to share insights and ideas, and develop solutions with the overall view of improving the environment in which we all live.”

Doron Merkel, KKL-JNF Chief Scientist, added: “KKL-JNF, as Israel's largest environmental NGO, continues to be leading Israel's efforts that make it a global player in the fight against climate change. We continue to promote large scale research projects that put Israel at the forefront of tackling the climate crisis and desertification process, that is going on throughout the region. At this very time, KKL-JNF is in the process of developing a brand-new Global Center for Combating the Climate Crisis. This international innovation center will be tasked with creating technological solutions to assist in the fight against climate change. We hope to foster an atmosphere of international cooperation to promote these advancements, namely with Persian Gulf countries and other regional actors.”

KKL-JNF hopes to add to the already burgeoning atmosphere of cooperation in the Middle East. Our goal at the Expo is to show the world the unique innovations that KKL-JNF has devised to help society prepare for new threats arising from climate change. For many years, since the establishment of the state of Israel and before, KKL has been paving the way in innovative land management solutions and now is our time to share with the region.

Desert regions, arid and semi-arid, constitute almost 40 per cent of the world’s surface, with over two billion people living in arid regions. These numbers are expected to increase due to population growth and climate change. One of the major challenges in such areas is responding to the demands for water and food, with direct impact on the welfare of populations in both developing and developed nations.

Israel is a world leader in areas such as efficient usage and recycling of water, drought-resistant crops, generation and storage of solar energy as well as dealing with the health challenges involved in climate change.
