Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company awarded the consortium of Siemens and Hassan Allam a contract to build the New National Energy Control Center in the New Administrative Capital of Egypt.
Officials from Egyptian Electricity Transmission, Siemens and Hassan Allam Construction signed the contract, valued at 838 million Egyptian pounds, at a ceremony in Cairo on 8 December, 2020. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
Egypt’s new power grid control center will deploy advanced software and equipment to monitor, manage and control extra-high voltage (220 kV and 500 kV) transmission networks and power generation stations across the country, and will include the tools needed for future grid expansion and for maintaining a secured energy supply, including from renewable sources and storage.
“This control center features advanced software and hardware that will make Egypt’s grid reliable and efficient today, and adaptive to the new technologies and energy sources of the future,” said Mostafa El-Bagoury, the Chief Executive Officer of Siemens in Egypt. “We are proud to be entrusted by Egyptian Electricity Transmission to build this control center and to support the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy’s vision to digitalize the sector and transform Egypt into an international energy hub.”
The New National Energy Control Center and New Backup Energy Control Center will run on Siemens Spectrum Power 7, the company’s flagship control center platform for transmission management in energy networks of any size. The highly customizable platform includes applications for grid monitoring and supervisory control, renewable power forecasting, network analysis and optimization, and general dispatch and control.
“Our partnership with Siemens spans many decades and already includes four control centers. We are confident that the company will provide solutions that will meet our current requirements as well as our future needs,” said Sabah Mashally, Chairwoman of Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company. “This project is another step toward a robust, smart and efficient electrical grid that’s not only crucial to Egypt’s economic development but will also allow for faster implementation of renewable energy sources in the country.”
Hassan Allam, the Chairman of Hassan Allam Construction: “We are proud to join Siemens in delivering this advanced control center that will ensure the stable supply of energy across Egypt. Our company has been operating in Egypt since 1936, and has contributed to many engineering, construction and infrastructure projects that have fostered tremendous economic and societal development across the nation and we look forward to working with Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy towards achieving Egypt’s vision 2030.”
Egyptian Electricity Transmission operates four control centers powered by Siemens technology that oversee the networks in Cairo, Alexandria, and the Upper and Middle Egypt regions. Two additional Siemens’ control centers are also used in the networks operated by the North and South Delta Electricity Distribution companies.
The scope also includes the construction of a building in the new Administrative Capital of Egypt to host the new National Control Center, including electro-mechanical works and all-auxiliary services.
