Sicap Has Met the End of Year Deadline Set by a Major Convergent Operator to Deploy a DSL Gateway-to-Mobile Pairing Offer, Due for Commercial Release Next Spring
Bern, Switzerland, 15th December, 2008 (Business Wire) - The newly extended Sicap Device Management Center (DMC) now enables automatic, network-based pairing between a DSL gateway and a dual-mode mobile device from a single platform. The announcement means that convergent operators are now able to gain a competitive advantage over mobile-only operators by offering their customers fully automated synchronisation of fixed and mobile devices.
In the as yet undisclosed deal, Sicap will leverage its over-the-air technology and device knowledge bases to activate settings behind the scenes on the customer's behalf, including Wi-Fi pairing with the home gateway box. As soon as the customer switches on his new phone, he will instantly be able to use it for GSM network calls, IMS or UMA based VoIP from the home gateway, or nomadic Wi-Fi connections. Sicap's device management process does not require any manual intervention on the mobile or home device by the user.
Benefits for the operator are threefold. Firstly, marketing of the service will not fail due to customer perception of the offer as complex. Secondly, seamless pairing confers the convergent operator with a technological advantage over its mobile-only competitors. Finally, the investment in a single server-side Device Management (DM) platform which works over multiple bearers to multiple device kinds constitutes a benefit in terms of sustainability and operational costs.
By encompassing DSL gateway management, Sicap Device Management has reached new heights. DMC now masters over-the-air updates with radically different protocol, from the relatively standard DSL always-on connections, to complex, device-specific protocols used to communicate with GSM /UMTS devices.
Sicap's strategy of catering for all types of devices from a single DM platform stems from the fact that GSM-connected devices and home devices have common provisioning and updating needs. Sicap adheres to Open Mobile Alliance (OMA DM) and the Broadband Forum (TR-069) Industry standards, and offers advanced PC-like continuous updates to the growing number of compatible devices. Interoperability agreements between Sicap, the vast majority of device manufactures, as well as device-side software management leaders, ensure that virtually all remote updates to all devices can be seamlessly delivered.
Sicap Sales Director Philippe Vial-Grelier said of the deal, There is a strong demand from our convergent operator customers to roll-out offers for synchronising personal settings across multiple devices. Our DMC is already running on over forty operator networks worldwide. Certain regions are now ripe for convergent offers and we are helping these operators get to market on time with seamless and live updates through home gateways to any device .
