Interactive Seminar to discuss recent energy developments Impacting the MENA region

23 November 2011, Kuwait:  Kuwait Shell yesterday completed successfully an Energy Seminar led by Mr. Mark Carne, Executive Vice President of Shell in the Middle East who shared the Shell story on 'The Journey Towards Future Energy'. The seminar took place at Kuwait University, in association with the College of Engineering and Petroleum and organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers and The American Institute of Chemical Engineers Student chapters. It was used as a platform for Engineering faculty and students to explore the challenges and opportunities of the Energy future affecting the globe and the MENA region.

In his speech, Mr. Carne highlighted that; "As populations grow and energy demand surges, the strains on the environment will intensify. Many scientists agree we need to halve CO2 emissions to avoid serious climate change. Shell is working with partners to help meet the world's future energy needs responsibly." He added, "Shell invests US$1 billion per year in technology research and development, more than any other international oil company, to develop technologies to enhance oil recovery, as well as to enable us to go into deeper and more challenging locations to produce gas and oil, all in an effort to produce more energy, in a clean and smart ways".

Dr. Adam Al-Mulla, acting dean of College of Engineering and Petroleum from Kuwait University said: "We are pleased to host Shell at Kuwait University premises today. It was encouraging having an open discussion with Shell leaders especially on global energy issues that concern the average person, let alone the Engineering faculty and students, who will play a big part in solving the global and local future Energy Security puzzle".

Mr. Ahmad Atallah, Chairman for Shell Companies in Kuwait said: "Kuwait is facing significant economic and population growth that will subsequently drive energy demand upwards. To keep pace, Shell is working with Kuwait Petroleum Corporation on various projects to support Kuwait in meeting its future energy demand, such as the short term imports of LNG and the development of the Jurassic gas fields to increase local production of non-associated gas. We are here today to remind the engineering students that there is a great opportunity to be realized through their future role in sustaining Kuwait's position in the Energy market".

'The Journey Towards Future Energy' Seminar was enthusiastically attended by 130 Kuwait University engineering students and faculty members, whom both had the chance to participate in an open and informative Question and Answer session.

Shell Lubricants' distributor, Al-Hafez Trading, supplies the local lubricants market and has more than 15% of the market share. In Kuwait's refineries much has been achieved over the past few years by Shell Global Solutions, in partnership with Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC).

Shell run the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3R) workshops programme, in collaboration with Mad Science, at various public and private schools within Kuwait. The 3R workshops serve as a platform to help elementary students explore environmental issues and realize the importance of the 3R principles. More than 2000 students have completed the 3R's workshops since 2008.

In 2010, Shell launched jointly with local partners the first state wide Kuwait Annual Pre-Engineering Design Annual Competition for high school students. Working with Kuwait Petroleum Corporation and its subsidiaries, Shell hold best-practice and knowledge-sharing workshops on various topics and organize exchange trips to Shell facilities in order to enhance understanding of our technologies and applications.

Another critical safety project that Shell helps to manage is Road Safety, to which Shell hold defensive Driving Sessions to workers and drivers annually, provide Road Safety Lectures at to the youth at schools and universities with Shell Road Safety experts.

Looking ahead, Shell is in talks with Kuwait University College of Engineering and Petroleum, to establish long term cooperation in the area of educating engineering students about Gas Operations and Management.
