At the Sharjah Higher Colleges of Technology (SHCT) there is a strong philosophy of unselfishly giving back to the community for the welfare of others - or altruism - as evidenced by its programs and various collegiate activities.
In keeping with that ethos SHCT's Business Department will host its annual business conference, entitled Altruism - the Business of Caring, at the Sharjah Women's College on February 23 from 9 am.
The conference will be held under the patronage of H.E. Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi Minister of Foreign Trade, who will also be a keynote speaker.
The conference will explore the intent of contemporary corporate philanthropy, challenging students to consider whether corporate altruism is simply a marketing tool or a genuine desire to give back to the broader community.
SHCT Business Department Chair Lauralee Kilgour said conference participants will represent a new generation of altruistic business students, graduates and leaders with their own approach to the concept of goodwill.
``This year's business conference provides a wonderful opportunity to meet a diverse array of incredible speakers who will share their vision of corporate altruism,'' she said.
``We are looking forward to a successful business conference that will inspire discussion and encourage our participants to give back to our local communities.
``At Sharjah HCT there is a long and proud tradition of helping others in the local, regional and international communities, through initiatives such as the Habitat for Humanity projects in Kenya, Egypt, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam,'' Ms Kilgour said.
``We've found that giving back to society, through such projects, brings out the best in our students.''
Other speakers at the conference will include Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, Chair of the United Nations Global Alliance for ICT and Development; Maria Sillanpaa, Founder of the Sustainability Group; and Ida Pretorius, Organization and Management Development Director for PepsiCo International.
Registration is by invitation only. To register, please contact Sara Ahmed at 06-5054-249 or sara.ahmed@hct.ac.ae
