3GSM World Congress, Cannes - SchlumbergerSema, a business segment of Schlumberger Limited, today announced the launch of its new set of products designed to enable mobile operators to roll out their Wi-Fi? services and bring users the benefits of the wireless world: fast, easy and secure access to information from anywhere.
Wi-Fi is a radio technology that networks computers to each other and to the Internet without wires. It is predicted that in 2003, 70% of European mobile operators will include Wireless LAN connectivity as part of their mobile data offering. It is also estimated that by 2007 mobile operators will own a 50% share of the Public WLAN market. Primary applications are access to email with attachments and corporate applications while away from their desks. Business users can access Internet and corporate networks from airports, airline clubs, hotels or conference centers with the simplest connection.
The determining factor for mobile operator success in Public Wireless LAN is largely based on the ability to leverage off current assets, including customers, partners and infrastructure. The SchlumbergerSema complete solution aims at helping mobile operators to address the PWLAN market and build on three core competencies:
- The ability to authenticate their customers
- The ability to perform roaming between networks
- The ability to effectively bill their customers and roaming partners
Besides the mobile network operator gateway and the billing package, the Wireless LAN solution by SchlumbergerSema comprises a SIM/USIM card, the key device that will enable the operator to securely authenticate the subscriber via its gateway, and then allow communication between the PC and the GSM networks.
"This new range of products will provide mobile operators with the most secure platform from which to stage a cost effective roll-out of Wi-Fi services and cultivate loyalty from highly valued corporate users," said Olivier Piou, president of the Products Group, SchlumbergerSema. "Our domain expertise in smart cards, intelligent networking and billing makes SchlumbergerSema the only company that can deliver in all of the areas critical to the mobile operator."
The SchlumbergerSema Wireless LAN solution will offer the subscriber high speed access to existing applications with minimum connection equipment, and from about anywhere, provided the place is a "hot spot". The set of solutions, developed in partnership with Symbol Technologies Inc. and Netinary, means that operators will be able to take advantage of the opportunity presented by Wi-Fi to build a service that complements their existing portfolio and build closer relationships with their premium, high-spending, mobile professional customers. Additionally, PWLAN will provide them with a new revenue stream both within the wholesale market and through providing Internet access to non-telephony customers.
The Wireless LAN package by SchlumbergerSema will be shown at the GSM World Congress on booth A22 Hall 1.
