04 November 2002
ATHENS, Greece - Schlumberger today announced that it is ramping up for its role as the Worldwide IT Partner for the 2004 Olympic Games in concert with the ATHENS 2004 Organizing Committee (ATHOC) for the Olympic Games' formal inauguration of its 1,000 square meters Integration Lab in Athens, Greece. Building on its successful delivery of the IT systems that supported the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Schlumberger is once again leading a consortium of best-of-breed hardware and software providers, and has primary responsibility for information technology consulting, systems integration, operations management, information security and software applications development for the 2004 Games.

ATHOC's Technology Department designed the fully ergonomic laboratory, which was constructed in the record time of 45 days according to the International ISO standards. Schlumberger and other partners will utilize the Laboratory to test and integrate the Games' IT infrastructure, information security systems and software applications, as well as train a core staff of 350 IT professionals and 3,500 volunteers who will run the systems at nearly sixty competition and non-competition venues during the Games. The Integration Test Lab is the first of five key sites that will provide critical IT support for the Games. The Technology Operations Center (TOC) will serve as the nerve command center, the PC Factory will prepare equipment before installation at venues, and separate Primary and Back-up Data Centers will host the servers.

"Schlumberger proved its capabilities as a successful IT aggregator at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, and we have complete confidence that they will play a key role in ensuring the success and information security of the 2004 Games, too," stated Dimitris Beis, technology general manager for ATHOC. "The transfer of proven technology under the supervision of many of the same key Schlumberger IT professionals that supported the Salt Lake Games will be an asset in cost-effectively and efficiently running the 2004 Games."

Schlumberger has already begun development of the eight key Games Management Systems (GMS) applications that support accreditation, accommodations, transport, health services and other critical onsite activities, and the Info Diffusion Systems (IDS) applications that are essential to real time delivery of score results and other important information to the media, officials, sponsors and other Olympic Family attendees at the 2004 Games. The first deliveries of GMS applications to manage accommodations and staffing have already been completed, and IDS applications for swimming and weightlifting are expected to be finished within the next 30 days. The majority of software applications will be completed by mid-2003.

Schlumberger is also starting analysis for the strong information infrastructure that will use several key solutions from its DeXa* Suite of Services. As with the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Schlumberger security and networking consultants are developing detailed plans to support the network architecture and information security needs of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

"The scope of the 2004 Olympic Games will be two to three times larger than the Salt Lake 2002 Games," commented Xavier Roig, general manager of Major Events at Schlumberger. "For instance, compared to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, the 2004 Games include 200,000 accreditations versus 89,000; 300 sport events at 37 venues instead of 78 sport events at 10 venues; and 10,000 computers compared to 5,000. Clearly it is a much bigger assignment than the Salt Lake Games, and our proven skills delivering secure, large scale, complex IT projects within budget, on time and to specification across all our key markets will be a major factor in the success of the Games."

The Schlumberger contract with the International Olympic Committee is the world's largest IT contract covering four Olympic Games over eight years: Salt Lake City in 2002, Athens in 2004, Turin in 2006 and Beijing in 2008.
