Doha, 29 July 2012
Qatargas announced today its support to Al Daayen Municipality for organising a "Garangao" night celebration which falls on the 14th night of the holy month of Ramadan.
"Garangao" is a mid-Ramadan tradition widely celebrated across various countries of the Gulf region especially by children. On this night, children roam around their neighbourhoods singing traditional songs that mark the occasion and receive a variety of gifts and bags of sweets from elders.
During a brief ceremony held at Qatargas' Doha Head Office, Mansour Rashid Al-Naimi, Qatargas Public Relations Manager, handed over a cheque to Khalifa Al Mohannadi, Head of Public Affairs at Al Daayen Municipality. The donation forms part of Qatargas' corporate social responsibility programme and is aimed at supporting initiatives that promote local traditions and customs.
Commenting on this support, Mr. Al Naimi, Qatargas, said:
"We are happy to partner with Al Daayen Municipality in organising this significant event that reinforces the social bonds within members of the local community. Qatargas is always at the forefront of supporting such initiatives and has been actively involved in numerous similar initiatives in the past."
Mr. Al Mohannadi, Head of Public Affairs at Al Daayen Municipality, said:
"We value the support of Qatargas in making this event possible. This initiative comes as part of the Municipality's efforts to keep alive local traditions and encourage the younger generation to preserve this form of folk heritage. We plan to make this event a memorable one for children and elders alike by organising several festivities in a traditional Garangao atmosphere."
As part of the celebration, children will receive, apart from the traditional Garangao gifts and sweets, a booklet explaining the origin and significance of this celebration. Folk songs related to the occasion will be presented in addition to offering traditional food items. There will also be various exciting contest for the children of the Municipality.
