20 January, 2003
On the 19th of January, 2003, Qatargas formally launched their new safety slogan and mascot, which is to be used extensively throughout the company in the months and years to come. The launch of the new safety slogan 'Incident and injury free is up to me', and the Qatargas mascot, a cartoon camel, was highlighted by a number of large posters put up by the entrance to the company's plant at Ras Laffan, on various plant buildings, as well as by the LNG port jetty. In addition, every employee received cups, T-shirts, coasters and stickers, designed to remind them that the company expects them to live up to the highest standards of safety required of an LNG industry leader.
The company's new safety slogan was the result of a contest among Qatargas employees to find a suitable safety slogan that reflects the sentiment of the company's safety culture. And the winning entry was 'Incident and injury free is up to me'. The mascot chosen to illustrate the slogan was adapted from a familiar mascot, originally developed to promote safe driving practices among the company's employees. The Qatargas camel is currently seen throughout the country, covering spare tyres on numerous four-wheel drive vehicles. Other variations of the Qatargas camel will be introduced in the months to come to promote additional safety, health and environmental initiatives.
Commenting on the launch, Qatargas' Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Faisal M. Al Suwaidi, said in a note to all Qatargas employees: "Although safety has always played a major part in our activities, including frequent safety meetings, we realized that there was not enough attention paid or commitments made to the safety standards required of a world leader in LNG production. As you know, we began our increased focus on safety awareness in the second half of 2002, aimed at heightening the company's safety culture. Let us move forward towards our vision of becoming the world's leading supplier of LNG, never forgetting that each one of us has a responsibility to ensure that Qatargas remains incident and injury free! Be safe!"
