- The NYUAD students’ initiative brings together UAE youth and seeks to build further environmental consciousness
Abu Dhabi: Students at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) hosted an interactive youth-led workshop to celebrate Earth Month and the 30th anniversary of Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots initiative, a youth-driven movement that has inspired thousands of young change-makers around the world.
More than 60 high school students from 19 schools and groups in Abu Dhabi participated in the workshop organized by NYUAD students, who are passionate about environmental sustainability, in collaboration with Roots & Shoots UK and UAE.
The workshop focused on the pandemic, its effect on the environment, and how we can use this opportunity to catalyze positive disruptions; it evolved into a meaningful dialogue around COVID-19’s impact on the environment and how recovery intersects with climate action. Participants had the opportunity to better understand the global climate crisis through a multifaceted lens while emphasizing on local solutions and climate policy.
The workshop is part of a wider initiative the NYUAD students are spearheading which includes discussions between the University’s students and school teachers in Abu Dhabi to better understand what pupils currently learn about the climate crisis and assess how NYUAD could supplement their knowledge. This is a first step towards creating an environmental education curriculum for highschool students in the UAE.
NYUAD Director of Community Outreach Suparna Mathur said: “Environmental education starts at a young age and such initiatives plant the seeds into creating a community with strong environmental consciousness. We are very proud of our students not only because they are passionate about environmental justice but because they turn their enthusiasm and knowledge into practice by educating and motivating their younger peers to further green initiatives that bring social change to the local community and beyond.”
As part of the University’s commitment to stewarding sustainability NYUAD has Environmental Studies integrated in its curriculum and offers education programs that seek to catalyze more conscious behavior through active engagement of the UAE residents, which is in line with Abu Dhabi’s significant commitment to environmental sustainability.
