"Fact or Fancy?" asks Dr. Harriet Arnone, Ph.D

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, February 27, 2008 -- The New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) on Monday hosted an interactive forum on the importance of, and benefits of, strategic planning.

Hosted by Dr. Harriet Arnone, Ph.D, Vice President for Planning and Assessment at NYIT, the forum engaged, involved and motivated attendees by using real-life, relevant examples of planning processes and their outcomes.

Real-world applications of strategic planning were emphasized, drawing on Dr. Arnone's rich experience. Both before and during her 11-year tenure at NYIT, spearheading academic and faculty development programs, and marketing and branding plans, Dr. Arnone has gained a deep understanding of the necessity of, and the benefits to be gained from, effective strategic planning.

Success in today's business environment requires that a company's leaders have the ability to create a vision of the organization's future direction as well as the course it needs to get there.

While business improvement techniques such as Total Quality Management and Re-engineering are often extremely beneficial to the ongoing progress of a business, correct Strategic Focus remains the single most important element in a company's success.

The plans put in place by Dr. Arnone have all been instrumental in furthering NYIT's goals of becoming a model 21st-century global institution; participants in the forum were able to benefit from the first-hand experience of Dr. Arnone, as well as putting to her questions pertinent to their own planning needs.

The forum looked at the mechanisms of planning, the potential causes of failure of strategic plans, practical considerations so often overlooked during the planning process, the adoption of best practices, and how to measure - and celebrate! - success.

Of particular relevance for those attending the forum were examples of how strategic planning has been implemented - to great effect - at NYIT itself. The 2030 plan for NYIT is a 25-year plan, further broken down into manageable, measurable milestones. The plan considered first what NYIT wishes itself to be, involved stakeholders at all levels to determine what was required to become this, and examined how much was possible - before creating a plan that incorporated all aspects of the business and was feasible and adaptable.

Harriet C Arnone, Ph.D, presenting at the forum, summed up the potential benefits of good strategic planning by saying, "In the earliest stages of strategic planning as part of our NYIT 2030 plan, the focus created when we were forced to look at where we were brought about a real sense of ownership; of vested interest. Furthermore, asking stakeholders to look 25 years into the future freed up their thoughts, allowing them to take their attention away from the immediate issues and to consider what NYIT should look like in many years' time."

"As a result, while we cannot predict the future, we are absolutely ready for it, sure of what we want to be and prepared for the decisions NYIT will have to make on the way."
