LG Electronics is looking to double its Middle East sales of home theatre systems (HTS) and plans to launch seven new models into the
region by the year end.

The move is part of a strategy aimed at making the global and regional digital leader the GCC’s leading supplier in the HTS and DVD sectors by the end of this year. Currently LG stands at number three in both segments in terms of regional market share.

LG, which currently commands around 15% of the Middle East HTS market, says increased sales hopes are fuelled by a shrinking price gap between DVD and VCR products, said to have fallen by an average of 35% over the past year.

"The closing price gap has made DVD and HTS fusion products more accessible to a wider customer base," said P.C. Choi, President, LGE Gulf FZE (LGEGF). "Greater availability of DVD and VCD titles has also increased demand for DVD and VCD players which, in turn, has reduced the unit prices by 20-30 per cent.

"We see the GCC states as particularly high potential markets."

The first thrust in LG Electronics’ renewed focus on the regional fusion products market is the launch of three super slim-line DVD players and two home theatre systems, which all carry the Korean giant’s one-year international guarantee.

"Our research has shown that a niche exists for a 2.1 channel home theatre system as well as the standard 5.1 system," said Choi. "LG is
expanding its HTS range to cover both and increasing the number of  stand-alone DVD players in its range."

LG’s 2.1 channel home theatre system – DW6522 – which still delivers surround HTS sound, is targeted at young adults and the second purchase market.

"With two 15 watt output speakers and 30 watt sub-woofer with built in amplifier and separate DVD player, the system will suit young adults and families who want a home theatre environment but may not want a full, five speaker set up," said Choi.

"Additionally, the DW6522 will suit families who may already have a five speaker home theatre and want a second, smaller system, perhaps for a child’s bedroom or den."

LG’s 5.1 speaker home theatre system – DT585 – is targeted more towards the first time HTS buyer. It has five 30 watt speakers and a 50 watt subwoofer, bundled with one of LG’s DVD/video combi units, the system is an all-in-one home entertainment solution.

"The beauty of the DT585 is the integration of DVD and six-head VCR in one player combined with a powerful speaker system which delivers a rewarding home theatre experience," said Choi. "In addition, one remote controls everything."

The DVD/video combi also allows two TVs to be simultaneously connected which means one set can play a video while the other plays a DVD.

"Obviously only one sound output can go through the five speaker system under this mode, but if Dad wants to watch a DVD action movie with
surround sound, the kids can watch their favourite cartoon video on a separate TV at the same time," said Choi.

LGs two new home theatre systems are format compatible for playback with DVD, VCD, Audio-CD, CD-R, CD-RW and MP3-CD.

LG has also added a further three stand-alone DVD players to its Middle East range. The DV7721, DV7942 and DV7822 are all super-slim models standing only 43mm in height.

"With multi-format playback, sensational design and the latest features, these DVDs bring a new dimension to home entertainment," said Choi.

LGEGF has also appointed a dedicated products manager for home entertainment products. Mr S.Y. Ryu will spearhead a upgraded marketing
campaign which aims to deliver competitive prices, a continuous flow of  new-to-market products and leverage the LG’s powerful regional brand awareness.

"This appointment is a clear signal of our determination to ramp up our activities in the home entertainment market," said Choi. "Fusion
products will be in strong focus in the coming three years."
