DUBAI – Female empowerment, leadership and entrepreneurship are among the topics covered regularly in the panel discussions and seminars at Expo 2020’s Women’s Pavilion, in collaboration with Cartier. This made it the ideal location for the official launch of the upcoming SheTrades Global, an event organised by the International Trade Centre (ITC) to connect female entrepreneurs with buyers, investors and partners, due to take place in Dubai from 13-15 February 2022 for its eighth edition.

Co-organised by the ITC and Dubai Industries and Exports, in collaboration with Expo 2020 Dubai, SheTrades Global – which has an underlying sustainability theme for 2022 – will consist of inspirational talks, clinics and masterclasses by experts, with an exhibition area, as well as B2B and networking meetings. The launch event at the Women’s Pavilion was attended by Pamela Coke-Hamilton, Executive Director of ITC, and Mohammed Al Kamali, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Industries and Exports.

Pamela Coke-Hamilton argued the case for more women in positions of authority. She said: “Shaping a more resilient, inclusive and sustainable world has become a crucial issue, which can only be solved with women’s essential participation. We seek to create new opportunities and really empower women. Expo 2020, by hosting a series of real and virtual events and meetings is helping to promote learning, innovation, partnerships and alliances, and to educate women on becoming entrepreneurs.”

Mohammed Al Kamali spoke of the benefits of SheTrades Global, the support it offers, and why Dubai is the perfect location for the 2022 event. Al Kamali added: “Dubai was able to draw the world’s attention with its success, observed during the pandemic period and beyond, and Expo 2020 Dubai is also a turning point and a fundamental pillar towards progress and prosperity throughout the coming years.”

The opening remarks were followed by several discussion panels, with a video highlighting the story of a Bangladeshi woman whose handicrafts business was disrupted by the pandemic, and who found the support to train in digital marketing via SheTrades Global, helping her to expand to new markets.

Further sessions explored other female entrepreneurs that had adapted during the pandemic, and the opportunities presented by social media platforms.
