Engineering specialist to the oil and gas industry, Labtech Modular Engineering, part of the ABZ Group, has announced a 200,000 two-year extension to its long-term contract with Coil Services for the rental of a welding habitat on Sakhalin Island.
The module, which was designed primarily for carrying out the welding and Non Destructive Testing (NDT) inspection of coil tubing, can be adapted for a multitude of uses including the welding of other types of pipe work and also the splicing of umbilical cables.
The unit on Sakhalin, which was purpose built to withstand that particular climate, allows the coil tubing to be joined and welded in a safe and comfortable environment. This is achieved by passing the tube through the pressurised cabin which is fitted with an electrical shutdown system allowing any hot work to be carried out in a hazardous area of the installation.
In addition to the long-term contract on Sakhalin, Labtech has another two habitats based in the North Sea currently involved in short-term contracts with Coil Services.
Labtech general manager Jim Manson said: "The benefits of using the purpose built welding habitat as opposed to the traditional method of erecting scaffold and tarpaulins speak for themselves and offers considerable cost savings. We have enjoyed a highly successful relationship with Coil Services over the years, and the extension of the Sakhalin contract really bears testimony to the quality of the work we have delivered for the company so far."
"Our integration into the ABZ Group is reaping the significant benefits as we look to strengthen our global growth, and the extension of our contract with Coil Services enhances our programme of international expansion."

About Labtech
Labtech Modular Engineering, established in 1983 and acquired by ABZ Group in May 2005, is dedicated to excellence in modular engineering and specialises in the design, manufacture, repair, refurbishment and hire of containerised and skid mounted equipment. Labtech is acknowledged for producing high quality products that are well suited to operation in highly arduous and hazardous conditions and are approved by many of the major operators in the oil and gas industry as a supplier of choice. The company's modules are deployed in the world's major oil and gas regions - offshore and onshore - including the North Sea, Australia, Japan, the Former Soviet Union, the Middle East, Brazil and West Africa. The cabins are designed to suit a range of operations including engineering cabins, laboratories,
logging units and MWD cabins. The welding habitats are effectively a module within a module and are used for the welding of coiled tubing offshore, in a safe, controlled environment, without the need of hot work permits. Labtech Modular Engineering employs 80 people in Blackness Road, Altens, Aberdeen,
Scotland. Further information can be obtained from the company's website www.labtechgroup.co.uk
ABZ Group was formed in May 2005 with a commitment to creating a diverse group of companies focused on providing an extensive range of products and capabilities to service the oil and gas sector internationally. Formed by Bob Forbes and Andy Bruce, who between them have more than 40 years
