Brussels - I.R.I.S., a listed company (EURONEXT Brussels: IRI) specialising in Intelligent Document Recognition (IDR), Electronic Document Management (EDM) and Optical Character Recognition (OCR), today announces that the company has been commissioned by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Health and Consumer Protection (DG SANCO) to help create the "Health-EU" website.

The European Union's new "Health-EU" portal was launched in Malaga (Spain), at a conference addressing the theme of Health and Electronic Communications (e-health). The portal presents all available information about public health issues at the EU level via a single website. It will be a key contribution to the objectives of raising the awareness and improving the health of European citizens.

Improved health is one of the goals of European integration and requires an active information dissemination policy. That is why the European Commission Directorate-General for Health and Consumer Protection (DG SANCO) has decided to provide a unique website where all citizens of the Union can find information related to health, lifestyle and environment.

The site has a potential audience of 1.5 billion people.

Very soon, it will be available in the 20 languages of the European Community and will also serve as a collaboration tool for scientists.

This site is unique in that it presents some 5,000 links to national websites and comprises no less than 20,000 web pages.

The information gathered is simple and reliable. It concerns the activities of the European Union and Member States, as well as international and non-governmental organisations.

For the new "Health-EU" website, I.R.I.S. has been commissioned by DG SANCO to work on both the IT development of the portal itself and preparation of the content. This website is based on the latest document management and web interface technologies.

Etienne Van de Kerckhove, CEO of I.R.I.S., comments: "We put together a multi-disciplinary team of project management experts, analysts and programmers with experience in Java and document management. Journalists also worked closely with health specialists from all over Europe and the employees of DG SANCO to carry out this project. We're delighted with the outcome, which has been unanimously praised by DG SANCO and the first users."

The address of the website is: http://health.europa.eu

About DG SANCO
The job of the Health and Consumer Protection DG is to help make Europe's citizens healthier, safer and more confident.

Over the years, the European Union has established EU laws on the safety of food and other products, consumer rights and the protection of human health.

The Health and Consumer Protection Directorate General has the task of keeping these laws up to date. In practice, it is national, regional or even local governments in EU countries that actually apply the EU's health and consumer protection laws. It is their job to make sure traders, manufacturers and food producers in their country observe the rules. Nonetheless, part of its role is to check that this is really happening and that the rules are being applied properly in all EU countries.

Its work is divided into three main areas: public health, food safety and consumer affairs.
