New DVD formats shorten recording times offering 8x and 16x speeds
Dubai, 16 August 2004: Imation, one of the world's leaders for removable storage solutions, has announced the availability of new DVD+R 16x and DVD+RW 8x. Both consumers and professional users now have the opportunity to shorten unproductive "windows" in front of their PC or DVD-Recorder using the new DVD+RW 8x and DVD+R 16x disks, offered by Imation.
During the second half of 2003, nearly 200 million DVDs have been sold worldwide, resulting in a growth rate of forty percent vs. the first six months of 2003. The market offers five different DVD-formats: DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW. Among these the two R-formats, allowing one-time-recording, clearly lead the sales.
"Users of optical storage systems are widely familiar with the various DVD-formats and most select one-time recordable formats, such as the DVD-R or DVD+R, allowing for storage up to 4.7GB of data," commented Alvaro Valdez, Regional Manager, Imation MEEA (Middle East and East Africa). "The RW label, for rewriteable, sets the product apart from the earlier mentioned family, enabling the user to write, erase and rewrite information directly to the disc."
DVD+R 16x
Imation's new 16x DVD+R media features the fastest recording speed of any current DVD format and supports write speeds of previous 8x and 4x media. With a certified recording speed of up to 22 MB/s and a 4.7GB capacity, Imation's write-once 16x DVD+R disk can permanently store thousands of high-resolution digital photographs, presentations or an estimated two hours of digital video (equivalent to eight hours analogue VHS-video) per disc. Imation's newest DVD media significantly cuts the recording time to four minutes or less.
DVD+RW
All DVD-disk formats are tailored to address applications where large data volumes should be stored on a quite compact and easy to handle rotating media. While some DVD-Disks are designed to be used as read-only media, DVD+RW allows the user to store and rewrite data many times, regardless whether this data consists out of audio or video files, digital documents or large picture files. A special formatting allows quick access to any file on the disk. The disks can generally be used in DVD players, DVD+R recorders and of course in special DVD+RW equipment.
Imation distributes both products through specialist computer stores, specialist retailers of consumer electronics, discount and department stores. The introduction of both DVD+R 16x and DVD+RW 8x media is scheduled for mid August 2004. According to Yaser Shan, Marketing Manager, Imation Middle East & East Africa, "the new media is expected to be available in the Middle East through Imation's distribution channel".
