Ms. Hanan Al Sahlawi, Director of Government Communication Office at the GPSSA and Chairwoman of the Permanent Technical Committee, said that the meeting aims to discuss issues related to the insurance protection extension in order to meet all the challenges facing this system. The meeting also seeks to provide support for the role of the system in offering insurance protection to all GCC citizens working outside their countries but within the GCC states. The meeting will also explore the avenues of cooperation and coordination between the GCC states on their decisions and recommendations, follow the execution of such decisions and recommendations and verify their feasibility and effectiveness.

The meeting will discuss the annual report of the Permanent Technical Committee for Civil & Social Security Schemes, said Ms. Al Sahlawi. It will present the latest numbers of those who are registered at the system compared to the past years, she said. Significant proposals will be also discussed to enhance the system ability and fulfill all the objectives the system is meant to achieve for GCC citizens, she said.

On the sidelines of the meeting, an introductory meeting will be held on this March 14 for employers and GCC citizens working in the UAE, which will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights, this meeting will provide ideal opportunity for GCC pension funds representatives to meet with the employers and their fellow citizens working in the UAE and review all the points concerning the insurance protection extension system and its benefits, helping them with all technical enquiries related to the law or pension regulations.

The unified system for insurance protection extension was approved by the decision of the GCC Supreme Council in its 25th session held in the Kingdom of Bahrain in December 2004 to serve GCC citizens. The decision confirmed extension of the insurance protection to cover the Gulf citizens who are working in other GCC states in both public and private sectors. The decision approved the draft unified system and its note to extend insurance protection (civil pension/ social security) for GCC citizens who work outside in other GCC member state. The decision covered all the GCC citizens who work in any member state for any employer whether public or private. Under this decision the provisions of pension and social security laws at the home country will be applied to the workers. According to the decision, employers must register and pay contributions on behalf of the employees in coordination with the pension authorities at the country of workplace. The UAE started to enforce the decision on 01-01-2007 by a Cabinet Resolution No. 18 of 2007.
