The original Harlem Globetrotters basketball team returns to Dubai after 15 Years
Dubai: Fifteen years after their last visit to the UAE, the world famous Harlem Globetrotters return to Dubai for a four game basketball show at Al Nasr Sports Club from 5-8th April 2006.
Organized by Delwood, a Dubai Media City based company, the original Harlem Globetrotters will have a four day stop in Dubai during their 80th Anniversary World Tour.
The Harlem Globetrotters basketball team was founded in 1926 and has been named the most popular and exciting professional entertainment team in the world. The squad has performed in over 118 countries in front of over 123 million spectators. Their record of over 21,800 games and 21,500 wins makes them the most successful professional team of any sports and the best and highest paid basketball players outside the NBA.
Most of the excitement that basketball fans enjoy today originated from the Harlem Globetrotters, such as the "slam dunk," the "talent scouting" or the "figure eight weave offense." Harlem Globetrotter Wild Thing Michael Wilson is the "King of the Air", holding the vertical Slam Dunk record since 2001 when he successfully slammed the ball through a hoop raised 12 feet off the ground. Basketball fans may have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be on the same court as Wilson during his performance here in Dubai.
The team knows no boundaries and crosses barriers between cultures, societies and people. As a group of "Goodwill Ambassadors", the Harlem Globetrotters have visited over 400 elementary schools in North America in 2004 and have donated more than 11 million dollars to charity organizations since 1993. Under the direction of owner Mannie Jackson, the team has raised and contributed millions to causes and charities including youth in South Africa and victims of the tsunami in Asia. Jackson is believed to have come up with the perfect formula for basketball in the 21st century comprising of entertainment, competition and goodwill, and will be in Dubai for the four day show.
After its astounding success with "The Legends Rock Dubai" tennis exhibition last November, Delwood is now staging their second major sports entertainment event in
Dubai. "We are honored to be able to present the Harlem Globetrotters in Dubai as this is again a perfect combination of entertainment and competitive sport," said Eric Gottschalk, General Manager of Delwood. "The team has a great history and they are true champions and pioneers of basketball around the globe".
The event will be staged at Al Nasr Sports Club on four consecutive evenings with ticket prices ranging from AED 65.00 to AED 95.00, and VIP Court Side seating from AED 200.00 to AED 250.00 per person. The UAE Basketball Federation is supporting the event and will be showcasing the local talent at the 2 pre-show exhibition games to be played by the under-12 UAE National Basketball team at 6:45 PM on Thursday, 6 April and the under-10 UAE National Basketball team at 5:45 PM on Friday, 7 April.
The four day event is set to be a huge success with major companies like organizer and title sponsor Delwood, World Tour Sponsor Western Union, Silver Sponsor and Official Transport General Motors, Gulf News - Official Newspaper, Sport Extra - Official Sports Magazine, Arabian Radio Network - Official Radio Station, INTV - the Official Broadcast Partner and Hewlett Packard - event sponsor. Tickets can be purchased at Time Out Ticketline, Box Office Middle East, Virgin Megastores and select Hallmark outlets.
