The first iteration of the Designer-in-Residence program will be held at Fikra Campus -- a new multi-purpose communal space located in Sharjah's iconic GIBCA Building.

Sharjah, United Arab Emirates- Fikra has announced the launch of the first Designer-in-Residence program coinciding with the opening of its new space, Fikra Campus, in Early December 2017. The residency program will be based at Fikra Campus and will begin on the 20th of January, until the 14th of April 2018.

Fikra is a global and award-winning multidisciplinary organization that acts as a catalyst for sharing knowledge and encourages an investigative and research-based approach to design through its different programmes.

The Fikra Desig ner-in-Residence program is concerned with design and invites designers based in the United Arab Emirates to apply and work alongside an international design resident, to be announced soon.

Commenting on the launch of the program, Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi, Founder, and Principal of Fikra said: "back in 2006 Fikra started as a multidisciplinary design studio in Sharjah that was always concerned with the discourse around design in the Middle East, namely what constitutes Arabic design. Today, Fikra is invested in the dialogue nurtured by conversations on the relationship between design practices locally and internationally."

He also added: "Fikra's Designer-in-Residence is a program created to challenge and broaden the conventional understanding of graphic design through a residency that focuses on design research and experimentation in the heart of Sharjah’s Al Wahda Street in the iconic GIBCA building."

The program will be based at Fikra Campus for the total period of the residency and will conclude with an exhibition in Fikra Campus.

The application is open to designers willing to conduct design research and delve into an experimental process of making. The subject of the investigation is open to the designer and may evolve over the period of residency.

Applications close on 30th of December 2017.
