Dewan Architects + Engineers, a leading multidisciplinary architectural design firm, has awarded the winners of the 2022 Dewan Award for Architecture held in association with the Tamayouz Excellence Award.

Now in its fifth year, the Dewan Award for Architecture is a global annual prize that calls on participants to design projects to tackle societal challenges in Iraq. The award is one of the main prizes of the Tamayouz Excellence Award, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and runs 10 internationally-recognized awards, competitions and challenges a year. For the 2022 Dewan Award for Architecture, entrants were asked to design a rehabilitation center for terrorism victims in Iraq’s capital city Bagdad.

Submissions were received from more than 34 countries and scrutinized by an independent panel of judges drawn from across the architecture industry and academia. The winners were honored at the 10th annual prize-giving ceremony of the Tamayouz Excellence Award held in Muscat, Oman, in January.

Awarded first place was Jawdat Khader and Rajab Elshahubi from Amman, Jordan. Their project, inspired by the Mudhifs in Iraq, where visitors are hosted and social life is centered, was praised by the judges for its “original approach that engages the site and responds spatially to the city and urban context and addresses several design aspects successfully”.

Jawdat, 27, and Rajab, 26, who work for Omrania and Module Studio, respectively, were presented with their award by Mohamed Al Assam, founder and executive chairman of Dewan Architects + Engineers and founder of the Dewan Award for Architecture. Winners of the award can select a six-months paid placement at Dewan or a $6,000 cash prize.

“It really feels amazing for us to win an international award like the Dewan Award for Architecture,” said Jawdat. “It also gives us huge motivation to pursue more endeavors like this one.”

“It is a huge honor to win the Dewan Award for Architecture,” said Rajab. “Winning the award has given us the exposure, the knowledge and the motivation to keep on the same track and to face new challenges with more passion and confidence.”

“Empowering young architects around the world to conceptualize projects that can positively contribute to solving societal issues is one the key aims of the award,” said Mohamed Al Assam, who received a commemorative trophy on behalf of Dewan as an official partner of the Tamayouz Excellence Award.  “We want architects to be bold, to think big and take on challenges that will have lasting benefits for the communities and countries in which they serve. The standard of submissions for 2022 was extremely high, and it was a tough job for the judges to select an overall winner.

“I would like to congratulate Jawdat and Rajab for their achievement, and I thank all the people and companies who took the time to enter the competition.”

Joint second place was awarded to Unanime Architectes Bahrain/France (Pierre Sfeir, Judy Abi Roustom, Darwin Cavanero and Eman Hasan Khalil), and Ayman Mohamed Ismail and Aya Mostafa Amin from Cairo, Egypt. Each runner-up received a $2,000 cash prize.
