Qatar University-Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), in conjunction with Qatar Foundation partner university Texas A&M University at Qatar, continues a long-term tradition under the sponsorship of Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) to organize annual symposia related to materials science and technology in Qatar.

The first Materials Science and Engineering Symposium, held on 18 February 2010 under the title, “Advances and Applications for Material Science and Engineering,” aimed to address different audiences, with a focus on Material research opportunities and collaboration with local industries and government organizations to resolve material-related issues. The annual symposium’s objective is to promote dialogue and exchange of ideas among experts from various disciplines and identify prospects for future interdisciplinary collaboration.

This year, more than 150 delegates participated in the 12th annual Materials Science and Engineering Symposium entitled, “Conversion of Material Waste to Value.”

The daylong symposium brought together experts from academic institutions research centers, industry, and government organizations to discuss the latest advances in materials science and engineering. The 2023 symposium is in line with Qatar National Vision 2030’s aim to develop a sustainable and diversified knowledge-based economy by addressing challenges and opportunities associated with material waste.

Dr. Ahmed Abdala, a Texas A&M at Qatar chemical engineering professor and co-chair of the symposium, said, “It is absolutely crucial for different stakeholders to come together, and collaborate to find effective and efficient solutions. At the Materials Science and Engineering Symposium, we showcased how immensely materials science and engineering can contribute to societal development. We explored important topics including circular economy, material conversion, and the use of alternative materials for roads in building a zero-waste society.

Professor Mohammad Irshidat, the Director of the Center for Advanced Materials, said, “The objective of this annual event is to promote dialogue and exchange of ideas among experts from various disciplines, as well as identify and address prospects for future interdisciplinary collaboration.”

The event featured distinguished keynote and invited speakers, a panel discussion and student presentations designed to offer students a chance to present their findings and receive valuable feedback from attendees.
