Dubai - The establishment of the Dubai Gem Certification services (DGC), the world's first ISO certified gem certification service for diamonds, gemstones, pearls, and jewellery items was announced today by the Dubai Metals and Commodities Centre (DMCC). This unique service allows jewellery traders and consumers to certify all varieties of gemstones and items of jewellery from renowned certification entities worldwide.   

The DGC entered partnership agreements with leading institutions from across the world to offer first class diamonds, gemstones, pearls and jewellery certificates such as the American Gem Society Laboratories (AGSL), the world-renowned Gubelin Gem Laboratory and Directorate of Precious Metals & Gem Stones Testing, Kingdom of Bahrain. These institutions boast the presence of leading gemmologists as well as the trust of the global gems and jewellery trade

DGC will provide an efficient and speedy turnaround for members as well as information and advisory services in diamonds, gemstones, pearls and jewellery items certification.

According to Tawfic Farah, Executive Director, Diamonds and Coloured Stones, DMCC, "The Dubai Gem Certification is an initiative to ensure that the gems and jewellery trade in the region is provided with the means to apply international standards in our markets. It will promote ethical and transparent trade practices and provide that competitive edge to regional businesses. The reputation of our members will be enhanced further as they will be seen to set and maintain the highest possible standards of business ethics and professionalism in the jewellery industry."

Laurent Grenier de Cardenal, Director - Coloured Stones & Gem Certification Services, of the DGC, said: "The DGC service will have a reputation for integrity in the business community and will at the same time build confidence amongst the buyers and the public in our gems and jewellery industry. We aim to be a standard of excellence that will bring us international esteem and recognition and will create a new benchmark in gem and jewellery certification."

Founded in 1996, American Gem Society Laboratories (AGSL) - is one of the leading diamond grading laboratories in the jewellery industry. The laboratory issues Diamond Quality Document (DQD), the first and only report to ever grade on diamond cut, the Diamond Quality Report (DQR) and the Diamond Consultation (DC). The AGSL sustains the highest professional standards of ethics, education and service.

Gbelin Gem Laboratory, a Swiss entity established in the early 1920's, one of the world's most renowned and highly recognized gemmological laboratories. The laboratory's services include gem identification and enhancement detection, diamond grading and pearl analysis. The analysis for which it is most renowned is the determination of a gemstone's provenance or origin.

The Directorate of Precious Metals & Gemstone Testing in the Kingdom of Bahrain was amongst the first to be established in the Middle East and since its establishment it has developed a positive reputation within the Middle East and beyond. Services rendered by the Directorate include serving the trade and public with their gemmological and assaying needs, overseeing the local jewellery sector to ensure that traders adhere to national and international laws and nomenclature and protecting consumers and the trade from fraud.

The creation of DGC enhances DMCC's portfolio of industry-specific market infrastructure designed for the diamond and coloured stones segments.

DGC will be launched to the trade through a seminar titled 'The Importance of Certification Standards' on Dec 7 to coincide with the Dubai Jewellery Show.

DGC is currently based in the Convention Tower, World Trade Centre Complex, Dubai, until such time that DMCC's is completed.

The Dubai Metals & Commodities Centre, a strategic government initiative, rated 'A' by Standard & Poor's, is establishing Dubai as a diamond trading and value-adding centre of global significance alongside leading international diamond centres including Antwerp, New York and Mumbai.  Under a free zone status, DMCC will accommodate every facet of the business - manufacturing, trade, education, certification and technology.   Streamlining the trade with global standards and protecting the legitimate diamond industry DMCC has been instrumental in implementing the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) in the United Arab Emirates. Through the creation of market-specific infrastructure, such as the Dubai Diamond Exchange, DMCC's industry initiatives provide a major impetus to the diamond industry in the region.
