Eng. Hawa Abdullah Bastaki, Director of Dubai Central Laboratory (DCL) said that the Municipality is keen to ensure the safety and quality of consumer goods.

"In accordance with our strategic plan and as a result of the efforts of the employees to activate the role and activities of DCL in all areas aimed at maintaining the health and safety of members of the society, a laboratory has been established to test the safety and quality of the textile materials within the Consumer Materials Testing Laboratory. It is equipped and prepared according to the requirements of the international quality management system standards ISO 9000 and ISO 17025 standards in the field of laboratories," she said.

This is in addition to the availability of sophisticated analytical instruments and the existence of specialized technical personnel who conduct inspections and tests on samples of various textile fabrics, ready-made clothing, and textiles used in different decorations, furniture and tents, according to the European and America standard specification criteria, said Bastaki.

She noted that this laboratory is the first of its kind in the Arabian Gulf that provides quality and safety testing of the fabric and its products. "The laboratory is qualified to conduct several tests in this area, such as: measuring the impact of acid or base, determine the fiber quality and the mix proportions quantity, determining the proportion of heavy metals and flammability. The laboratory has completed more than a thousand tests of approximately 250 samples," said Bastaki.

About the beneficiaries of the textile products quality and safety testing services, she said that there are several categories of beneficiaries such as dealers, suppliers, exporters, and local factories operating in this field as well as organizations which are concerned with the quality and safety of the textiles used for uniforms such as police, armed forces and civil defence and also the ordinary consumers.
