Highlights:
DP World becomes first global marine terminal operator in the world to gain international certification for its security management system
ISO/PAS 28000:2005 security management standard met at DP World Head Office and DP World-managed Djibouti Container Terminal
Standard to be rolled out to DP World's global network of terminals
Dubai, 7 September 2006: DP World, a leading global marine terminal operator, has become the first global company in the transport and logistics industry to gain certification to an international standard for its security management systems and operations. Lloyds Register Quality Assurance (LRQA), an independent international certification body, has audited DP World for compliance with the international standard ISO/PAS 28000:2005 at both the corporate head office in Dubai, UAE, and its chosen site, Djibouti Container Terminal.
ISO/PAS 28000:2005 is the management system that DP World has adopted as the base standard for implementing and managing its corporate security policies. The international system underpins all of DP World's internal and external security initiatives and activities, and will be phased in across the whole DP World network of terminals following its successful implementation in Dubai and Djibouti under the supervision of HART Security consultants.
As a consequence of DP World's adoption and implementation of the standard, its network of ports will have the ability to effectively implement mechanisms and processes to address any security vulnerabilities at strategic and operational levels, as well as establish preventive action plans. All terminals will also be required to continually assess security measurements in place to both protect its business interests and ensure compliance with international regulatory requirements such as the ISPS Code and other international supply chain security initiatives. The standard will complement all international security legislative codes DP World already conforms to at its terminals.
DP World Chairman, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem said:
"We are delighted to have achieved this certification. This is the very first time that any global company in our industry has met such a rigorous international standard, and is testament to DP World's commitment to the highest security management practices. It is impossible to overstate the importance security plays in our business, to our customers and to DP World."
Chairman of Hart Security, Lord Richard Westbury commented:
"HART has been privileged to work for the last year in a strategic partnership with DP World, whose top level management has been totally committed to improving security and achieving an internationally recognised security management system. In a changing legislative and regulatory environment, DP World now has the benefit of consistent security standards in line with strategic objectives, management and leadership verification, improved security awareness throughout the company, and a clear definition of security roles which ensures timely preventative action."
The certificate was presented by LRQA to DP World CEO Mohammed Sharaf at a ceremony in Dubai this week.
Accepting the certificate, Mohammed Sharaf said:
"We are very pleased to have achieved this recognition. Security is a baseline service we offer our customers. This recognition underlines to them that we are committed to focusing strongly on maintaining or enhancing security in our terminals around the world."
LRQA Director Ian Hodgskinson, said:
"This is an important step in securing the supply chain globally. It is a challenging standard to achieve and we have been impressed with the rigorous effort DP World has put in to achieve it. We look forward to other leaders in the industry embracing the standard."

About ISO/PAS 28000:2005
ISO/PAS 28000:2005, Security Management Systems for the Supply Chain, has been developed and introduced in response to a demand from the transportation industry for a common security management standard, with the ultimate objective of improving the overall security of international supply chains.
ISO/PAS 28000:2005 is compatible with the ISO 9001:2000 (Quality) and ISO 14001:2004 (Environmental) management systems standards and has been designed in order to facilitate the integration of quality, environmental and supply chain security management systems within each organisation. It is the intention of DP World to link these standards across the company. This particular standard has been selected by DP World for its compatibility and complementary application to other Governmental and International Custom Agency security initiatives including: the World Customs Organisation Supply Chain Security and facilitation of global trade initiative, the EU Customs Security Program - Authorised Economic Operator (AEO), and the US Customs and Border Protection initiative - Customs Trade Partnership against Terrorism (C-TPAT).
