Dubai, 25 February, 2009: Global marine terminal operator DP World's commitment to UAE national students was underlined when three Dubai Men's College (DMC) students formally handed over a scale model of a Tandem Lift Gantry Crane they built with DP World's guidance and support.
The handover marked the successful completion of the students' training programme with DP World's UAE region.
Majid Al Mannaei, Khalid Mohammed and Rashid Mahmood, Higher Diploma students in Mechatronics at DMC, completed the project assigned by the technical department of DP World's UAE Region during their six-month work placement programme. Tandem Lift Gantry Cranes can lift two 40 foot containers or four 20 foot containers at once, which is double the capacity of a normal gantry crane.
Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of DP World's UAE Region, said:

DP World 's UAE Region selected Majid, Khalid and Rashid in June 2007 for the six-month work placement. The technical department guided them throughout the project, which consisted of constructing a 1:50 scaled down model of a crane, at Jebel Ali and Port Rashid terminals.
The assignment was completed at Dubai Men's College after the work placement period with DP World and the report was submitted for assessment. The model was later exhibited at the HCT Annual Conference in Madinat Jumeirah and at DMC during last year's Engineering Conference.
DP World plans to use it in future exhibitions to demonstrate how a tandem lift crane works.
Commenting on the project, team leader Majid Al Mannaei said: "Although it was very challenging to design and build the crane, the experience was both educational and enjoyable for us. We are very proud of the finished product and would like to thank DP World for giving us the opportunity to work on such a prestigious project and for providing us with so much support and guidance."
