Dubai is the first in the Middle-East region to become part of the German Trauma Registry.
United Arab Emirates, Dubai, November 23, 2011: The Emergency and Trauma Centre at Rashid Hospital recently joined the biggest trauma registry and network of Germany.
Such registries only exist in a few countries in the world and Germany has the biggest trauma registry worldwide.
Dr Moin Fikree, Clinical Director of the Emergency and Trauma Centre at Rashid Hospital said, "This cooperation is of significant importance to us. The German trauma registry is very well reputed and while we internally benchmark ourselves, we would like to have international benchmarks as well. As part of this cooperation, we will send complete details of how we treat every polytrauma patient to Germany and they will analyse our data and benchmark it with other reputed hospitals in the registry."
The registry is the largest trauma registry and includes hospitals from Germany and 18 neighbouring countries. This is the first time a health establishment from the Middle-East region has become part of the registry.
In order to be a part of this registry, every health organisation goes through a rigorous process of auditing. A team of specialists visited the Trauma Centre in Dubai and audited it before inviting the centre to be part of the registry.
Dr Fikree said, "There is a comprehensive database for each patient which we need to fill in. It has over 200 parameters and includes all details from the time taken for each procedure once the patient is admitted until he is discharged from ICU. It also includes all details of the tests and investigations."
Dr Fikree highlighted that this registry is only for those cases which are considered to be polytrauma cases- which means the patient has ensured multiple injuries and is in a critical condition.
The details of each polytrauma patient which will be sent to Germany include blood investigations, x-rays, details of surgeries performed, ICU management.
Dr Fikree said, "There is no doubt that this is an extremely comprehensive system and will provide us with valuable data."
He said the data will be for polytrauma cases such as accidents including those that arrive from falls and traffic accidents. "In recent times, we are witnessing a decline in the number of admissions due to accidents caused by falls from a height; however there is no decline in the number of road traffic accidents, especially cases of pedestrians who get hit by a car."
All the data collected for such polytrauma cases will be sent to Germany for analysis. Dr Fikree said, "The analysis will look into the time taken for each procedure; patient outcomes etc and our data will be benchmarked with a big pool of hospitals that are in the registry."
In Germany all the hospitals in the network are linked to each other and to optimize patient care, patients are transferred to hospitals in the network based on the level of care required and the capability and capacity of the hospital.
Annette Kunzel, Managing Director of DIOCERT GmbH said, "We are pleased to extend our work to the Middle-East region. This will provide us an opportunity to share information and gain insight into the different working styles of healthcare systems in Dubai and Europe."
She said this registry helps provide better assurance of polytrauma management in the long run.
