Program Remains Significantly Rewarding to Budding Artists
Dubai - The DEYAAR Visual Arts Internship Scheme at Art Dubai by DIFC, the Middle East's largest and most diverse contemporary art event, has successfully brought together over 80 students from numerous universities in the UAE, underscoring the status of the event as an attractive launch-pad for emerging artists and art professionals.
In addition to offering practical experiences to the interns, the programme aims to open potential avenues for future employment through facilitating networking opportunities with reputed galleries and best-of-breed artists from across the world.
The third edition of Art Dubai opened on 18 March at the Madinat Jumeirah and has attracted a record participation of 68 international galleries. The event also plays host to a series of activities such as workshops, video presentations and performances. The event concludes on 21 March.
Laura Trelford, Education Manager of Art Dubai, said: "We have some of the most talented and energetic students demonstrating an extraordinary commitment to contemporary art. The interns work closely with the galleries, artists, media and even production houses to ensure everything is in place and on time. Additionally, they help organize many of the activities at the venue.
"Last year, we had 40 students from four participating universities and we are delighted by the doubling of this number, illustrating the strong appeal for art among young art enthusiasts in the region."
Reem Al Ghaith, an Emirati student last year, is now on her way to establishing a successful career as an artist.
Swiss national David Siepert, MFA graduate, has worked on Art Dubai for the last three months. Following a stint in the London office of Art Dubai, he arrived in the emirate to imbibe the real flavor of the fair.
David said: "It has been a wonderful experience and a very positive one working with so many energetic people who are out to create something so beautiful."
David's sentiments are seconded by Emirati Sarah Saifaei, a recent graduate and an upcoming artist. Sarah said: "Art Dubai has opened new horizons for me and has shown me the possibilities that exist in visual arts. As a coordinator of Art Park, I am responsible for managing many aspects of this space and although it is a demanding job, I love it. I would recommend this experience to any art student who is keen to gain knowledge and grasp some of the dynamics in organizing a large scale art event such as Art Dubai 2009."
Janet Belloto, Assistant Professor of Art and Design at Zayed University, said: "We are proud many of our students have chosen to participate in the Art Dubai internship programme and learn from its real life experiences. We are delighted to be part of an event that is effectively shaping the cultural landscape of the Middle Eastern region. We believe this event adds value not only to the experience of professionals, but also serves as a real time platform for students as well. We actively encourage all students of the Arts faculty to explore this programme."
The DEYAAR Visual Arts Internship Scheme is only one element of the ambitious DEYAAR Education Programme at the fair, which aims to raise awareness for cultural outreach and exchange.
Art Dubai 2009 will draw to a close on 21 March with a series of START workshops, talks and book launches.
