Dubai, UAE; 20 June, 2014: In recognition of its ongoing efforts in preserving the environment and adopting environmental best practices, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has received a five star accreditation from the British Safety Council for 2014. This is the 3rd consecutive year DEWA receives this prestigious accolade. In 2012 and 2013, DEWA received the Globe of Honour in environment, also from British Safety Council, which is granted to distinguished organisations around the world that implement the highest environmental standards and adopt the latest policies and systems to preserve the environment.
"I dedicate this global achievement to HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, whose directions gave us insights for our roadmap towards leadership and excellence in all administrative processes, services, and operations. The five-star accreditation is a testament of our successful efforts in adopting the best international environmental and sustainability practices. It enhances DEWA's competitiveness, drives sustainability in Dubai and promotes its position as a global hub for trade, finance, tourism, green economy, and sustainability" said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
"These achievements are a proof of the success of DEWA's strategies and its efforts to achieve the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 which aims to manage the demand-side in energy, protect the environment and promote the culture of conservation of natural resource to ensure their sustainability for generations to come," added Al Tayer.
DEWA has also accomplished major achievements in enhancing the efficiency of generating electricity and desalinating water, and minimising greenhouse gases, carbon, sulphur, and nitrogen emissions by an average of 15%.
DEWA managed to reduce carbon emission to 0.48 tonnes/megawatt hours compared to 0.56 tonnes/megawatt hours in the United States.DEWA reduced carbon emissions by 11.9 parts per million compared to 87 parts per million in Europe, 1.02 parts per million of sulphur as against 13.4 parts per million in Europe, and 22 parts per million of nitrogen compared to 27 parts per million in Europe
"This recognition adds to DEWA's achievements thanks to its clear vision and strategies and ambitious plans. DEWA utilises of all its capabilities to achieve its environmental goals. Electronic and smart services are among the tools that help in keeping the environment. In 2013, DEWA's customers conducted 3.3 million transactions through its website and smart app. This helped eliminate the emission of 11,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide that could have resulted from customers travelling to and from DEWA offices," said Dr. Yousef Al Akraf, EVP of Business Support and Human Resources at DEWA.
The British Safety Council is one of the largest organisations in the world that assess and classify health, safety and environmental systems. The Five Star Environmental Audit provides an independent evaluation of an organisation to ensure sustainable environmental practices are being followed at all times.
