Cairo: Egypt’s leading real estate developer, Al-Futtaim Group Real Estate (AFGRE), announced its recent cooperation with ‘Baseera Foundation for People with Visual Impairment’ by covering the costs of cataract surgeries for 300 patients, selected upon surveys undertaken by medical convoys in poor villages of Aswan Governorate.

"We highly value our collaboration with Baseera Foundation to help protect and empower people with visual impairment, thanks to the foundation's extensive experience in carrying out medical surveys and providing all required services with high quality,” Managing Director of Al-Futtaim Group Real Estate (AFGRE), Eng. Ashraf Ezz El Din said. “Our participation contributes to the treatment of underprivileged patients, in order to help them feel inclusive and integrated within the society. This confirms our robust strategy and keenness in fulfilling our role towards social responsibility, especially that healthcare and education are closely related to the prosperity of people.”

From her side, Doaa Mabrouk, Founder and Managing Director of Baseera Foundation, expressed her utmost gratitude to this new collaboration, saying Baseera Foundation has acquired an unrivalled experience, which made it one of the leading entities that provide integrated eye services, by launching medical convoys and conducting surveys in poor villages. Its medical team had examined more than 100,000 people and conducted over 6,000 surgeries in poor villages in Cairo, Beni Suef, Sohag, Luxor, Aswan, as well as other governorates.

Representing 85% of eye surgeries, negligence in conducting cataract surgeries may lead to vision loss by 51%, according to Mabrouk. Despite being a minor surgery, the difficulty of accessing eye treatment services in poor villages makes cataracts among the most common causes of blindness and visual impairment in those areas, she added. In most cases, cataracts affect the elderly and children born with medical conditions. It can also arise after eye infections or other diseases.

The organization combines the expertise of Ms. Mabrouk in the development of visually impaired people (VIPs) and Dr. El-Missiri’s extensive experience in sustainable development. Baseera empowers and enables the Egyptian VI community to realize their abilities and become independent, proactive, and productive individuals in an accepting society. To reach this goal, Baseera works by providing a set of services, starting with awareness, prevention, early detection, treatment, early intervention, and rehabilitation, which needs to be integrated in education and social life. Baseera provides training to the VI surrounding communities, specifically caregivers, teachers, and health professionals. It works on raising awareness about VIPs, their capabilities, and how to support them. In addition, we advocate the making, amendment, and implementation of policies for the VIPs in Egypt.
