Over 500 buildings and monuments across the Kingdom lit up in support
Manama, 15th November 2011: The Bahrain World Trade Center (BWTC) lit up in blue yesterday to commemorate World Diabetes Day. The BWTC joined over 500 buildings and monuments selected by the Bahrain Diabetes Society to represent the Kingdom of Bahrain in a global campaign organized by the International Diabetes Federation(IDF) and the World Health Organization(WHO).
World Diabetes day is a global event bringing together over 195 countries to raise increasing awareness on diabetes, including children and adults affected by diabetes, health care professionals, healthcare decision makers as well as the media. A blue circle has been established as the global symbol of diabetes standing for unity in diabetes holding the same color as the flag of the United Nations.
World Diabetes Day (WDD) is the primary global awareness campaign for the disease. It was introduced in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to the alarming rise in diabetes around the world. In 2007, the United Nations marked the Day for the first time with the passage of the United Nations World Diabetes Day Resolution in December 2006, which made the existing World Diabetes Day an official United Nations World Health Day.
