A large number of women academicians and students at the Dubai International Academic City attended an interactive health awareness session and were given free comprehensive health checks by ASTER

ASTER, a leading medical chain part of the healthcare conglomerate, DM Healthcare, brought a large number of women academicians and students from Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) together in an interactive session on women's health issues to celebrate the International Women's Day 2013. Held at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Dubai, the session brought many health issues into focus with the aim to empower women with knowledge and self-awareness. International Women's Day is marked across the globe on March 8, 2013.

The session addressed various topics concerning women ranging from diet and nutrition, skin and hair to more serious issues such as obesity, anaemia, and menstrual problems such as Dysmenorrhoea, Pre-Menstrual syndrome, and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). With the aim to encourage healthy living among women from a young age, ASTER aims to help create a healthy society and environment at large.

The seminar was followed by free hair and skin analysis tests, Vitamin D and Calcium tests and a general health check-up for the women. The seminar was addressed by doctors from ASTER from various medical disciplines including nutrition, gynaecology and general medicine. The doctors were also available to offer free consultations to the women during the seminar.

Speaking at the session, Dr. Stuti Mishra, Specialist Gynaecologist at ASTER Medical Centre, said: "Adolescence is a very healthy period of time, where one is filled with carefree positive energy and is yet far from experiencing adult health issues. At ASTER, we believe that prevention is better than cure. If adolescents start taking care of themselves from this age, and lead a good healthy lifestyle, they can help themselves live a much healthier life."

Dr. Stuti added, "It is very important for girls to be aware of the development in their body and recognise the symptoms of change. If anyone has a family history of health issues or diseases such as diabetes or heart problems, they should undergo routine check-ups as they are more prone towards the diseases."

Commenting on the importance of a balanced diet, Ms. Lubna Surya, Nutritionist at ASTER Medical Centre, said: "There are many misconceptions which the young mind holds such as crash dieting and losing weight magically without exercising, believing supplements is the best solution, thinking soft drinks will not affect their health, and indulging into smoking and drinking. It is important young women understand that these actions are harmful for their health."

Mr. Lubna added, "We always encourage women to follow a healthy balanced diet, and consume the best portion of nutrients from all foods. Along with good eating habits, it is equally important to have a healthy lifestyle and follow it on a regular basis."
