Hot on the heels of winning the Lloyd's List Global award for Corporate Social Responsibility, ASRY has been shortlisted for two awards by SEA TRADE Middle East and Indian Subcontinent. The Awards ceremony will be held at Dubai's Atlantis Hotel on the evening of 25th October 2010.

"The award nominations for The Ship Repair/Shipyard Award and The Corporate Social Responsibility Award are well deserved recognition of the increasing reputation held by ASRY in the maritime world" says Shaikh Daij bin Salman Al Khalifa Chairman of ASRY. "The Board of ASRY is committed to continue to strive for excellence in all aspects of our work at ASRY. We have an exciting yard expansion program underway which will see the entering into operation of a new 1,380m repair quay wall at the end of 2011, as well as a large new offshore fabrication area. This will add greatly to the range of customers that we will be attracting ".

ASRY has a distinguished history in the maritime industry.  Since the commencement of operation of the Arab Ship Building and Repair Yard, ASRY in September 1977 with a 500,000 tons dwt. dry-dock and two jetties, ASRY has gone through various expansions. In 1992, two floating docks were added which can handle vessels up to 120,000 tons dwt. and 80,000 tons dwt. respectively. In 2008, ASRY added two Slipways each with a dry berth length of 255 meters and a capacity of 5,000 tons dwt.

With a permanent workforce of 1,600 people, of which over 65% are Bahraini nationals, ASRY was among the first shipyards in the world to receive ISO certifications for Quality, Management, Environment and Health & Safety Systems in addition to the ISPS code for Port Security

The nomination for Ship Repair Yard is judged on a number of criteria, including investment in new capacity with the ability to deliver projects on time.  " ASRY has built up a reputation for quality, cost effective and efficient service delivery " adds Chris Potter  CEO of ASRY.

The second nomination for Corporate Social Responsibility follows swiftly on the award won by ASRY at the Lloyds List Global Awards in London.  "These nominations and the award won from Lloyds List, are welcomed recognition of the value that the ASRY's Board and its employees have placed on their role as corporate citizens over the years" says Shaikh Daij. He also added "The nomination for its numerous CSR activities impressed the judges for its enhancement of safety and environmental protection and its commitment to employee and community welfare.

ASRY has built a Sludge Treatment Plant which currently produces around 2,000 tons a year of compost material that is used for landscaping purposes within the shipyard and Bahrain.   The Sludge Treatment Plant also separates oil and water, with the resultant clean oil then being sold on the open market. Bahrain's Environmental Control Centre Directorate is currently leasing with ASRY with regard to the Kingdom's ratification of IMO's MARPOL Convention and the designation of the Arabian Gulf as a special zone for the cross-border transport of industrial waste.

The shipyard also allocates a substantial part of its annual budget to various charities in Bahrain such as financial support for local sports teams; the cleaning of public beaches; educational bursaries and the establishment of a Seafarers Centre within the shipyard.
