Roads & Transport Authority: H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) inspected the work progress in a number of Dubai Metro projects that included Jebel Ali Parking Facilities, the Grade level of the Red Line near Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority (JAFZA), Jebel Ali Industrial Area Station, the main Power Station as well as the main sector of the Elevated Route of the metro.

During the tour H.E. Al Tayer was accompanied by engineer Adnan Al Hamadi, Acting Director of Rail Construction Dep't, engineer Abdul Rida Abu El Hassan Director of Rail Planning & Designing Dep't, engineer Ramadan Abdulla Director of Operation Dep't and Badria Mohammed Khalifa Director of Public Relations in addition to a number of officials from the supervising Consultancy Office and the Contracting Companies engaged in the project.

Al Tayer set off his tour by inspecting Jebel Ali Parking Facilities which occupies an area of 110.000 square meters, where he was briefed on the progress of work in the project which has now reached a completion rate of more than 36%. The facility includes a parking space for metro coaches fully air-conditioned and equipped with an advanced fire-fighting system. It has a capacity of accommodating up to 40 trains. It is fitted with a control center of metro operation systems which ensures the safety of doors, brakes and engines of each train, as well as the safety of the air-conditioning system and other hi-tech subsidiary electronic systems. It also contains maintenance workshops and special workshops for washing and cleaning the metro coaches. Al Tater directed to advance the date of conducting the operational tests of the train in Jebel Ali Station such that it will be conducted in March or April next year.

The Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA also reviewed the progress in manufacturing the metro coaches in Japan in which the completion rate has reached 6%. The total number of trains slated for operation in both the Red and Green lines is 69 trains; 44 on the Red Line and 25 on the Green Line. Each train consists of 5 coaches with a total capacity of around 643 passengers. Coaches are classified into two classes; the First Gold Class, at the front of the train and fitted with 19 deluxe seats. It also has 15 seats reserved for women and children along with spaces for prams and luggage. It is the first ever Gold Class coach in a metro operating within a city worldwide.

The Second Class, known as the Silver Class, is made up of four coaches with a seating capacity of 104 passengers each. In matching with the commitment of the RTA towards the rights of persons with special needs and integrating them in the community, seats and spaces have been reserved for special need persons in all coaches of the metro.

Al Tayer completed his tour by inspecting the main power station in Jebel Ali, which occupies an area of 3659 square meters. The station has a generating capacity of 100/80 MVA and has now reached a completion rate of more than 66%. H.E. Al Tayer hailed the efforts of employees and the good progress made in building the station.

During his tour in the Ground level of the Red Line near JAFZA, Al Tayer directed the concerned bodies to take all actions to prevent rain water from coming through the sector. He also directed to test the water proofing materials and the dimensions of water drainage systems. Due attention has to be made to the buffer zone between Sh. Zayed Rd and the collision-prevention rail of the metro line as well as the barriers used to suppress the lighting resulting from the train and coaches.

At the end of the tour Al Tayer expressed his pleasure over the work progress in the various sites of the project and praised the assiduous efforts made by the employees to deliver the project. Nevertheless he called upon the contracting company to redouble its efforts to ensure that the project is completed on schedule.
