There has been no spread of the Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) among expatriate workers, the Health Ministry affirmed yesterday.
The reassurance came after videos went viral reportedly showing expat workers in the Sitra quarantine facilities.
The clips claimed to highlight the unhygienic conditions and practices at the facilities as a result of a large number of people being brought in.
It said the people already there feared a further spread of the virus within the facilities. The ministry dismissed the claims and said the workers were in proper isolation.
“There is no spread of the virus among expat workers, as is being propagated,” it said on Twitter.
The 47 migrant workers who tested positive were transferred to the isolation and treatment facility in Sitra. They were under precautionary quarantine at their residence in co-ordination with the company’s management and they have not left the area (Salmabad). Precautionary measures were taken for all those who were in contact with these cases and laboratory tests were carried out to ensure their safety.
They are under observation, and it has been decided to extend their stay in a precautionary quarantine for two weeks. Meanwhile, informed sources told the GDN that hundreds of expat workers at the Salmabad labour camp were evacuated in the last two days. The GDN earlier reported that the camp with almost 400 cleaning company workers was quarantined after two of them tested positive for Covid-19 on March 6.
Closed
“The entire building remained closed, while the labourers were still living there until two days ago,” said the source.
There was no one there except security and it is not sure if the labour camp has been fumigated yet. We hear that in the last two days the men were taken to Sitra. However, the shops downstairs were fumigated and will reopen once the authorities give the order.
